-- Jean-Luc GodardYou've stumbled across my film page. Welcome, though there's not much here except for the links I need when I get one of my FREQUENT cases of "Who-IS-that-actor-and-WHAT-have-I-seen-him-in-before?"; or 'Rocky'-won-the-197*-Oscar-for-Best-Picture?!-Good-grief-what-was-its-competition?
Other than that, there's not much here, except my cyberspace confession that I'm a cinema snob. There is a difference between films and movies , and I prefer films .
What's the difference? Hmm. It's rather like trying to explain the difference between cobalt blue and navy blue to a blind man: he'd see the difference if he saw them.
One might say "If Steve Martin is in it, it's a movie; if Ralph Fiennes is in it, it's a film" except "The Spanish Prisoner" is a film and "The Avengers" is a movie.
How 'bout "If Sir Derek Jacobi is in it, it's a film and if Elvis Presley / Chris Farley is in it, it's a movie"?
1980s Tom Hanks pictures are movies, 1990s Tom Hanks pictures are films.
Gods and Monsters, aka Father of Frankenstein is a film, and
Young Frankenstein, aka Frankenstein Jr. is a movie.
Don't get me wrong, I like a laugh, and "Young Frankenstein" happens to be one of my favorite movies. But generally, I'm appalled at the videos people rent, and pay to see at the cinemaplex.
A movie may move you in ways (no pun intended), but a film moves you, makes you want to live better and/or appreciate the gift of life as is. A film makes you hug a loved one.
Movies sometimes have sight gags. Films have sight poetry. Films express visually what might be cheapened with words.
The (UK) Internet Movie Database is the most comprehensive source of film information I've found to date.
Whaddaya want to know?...filmographies for actors, directors, writers, composers, cinematographers, editors, production designers, costume designers, producers and a miscellaneous catch all section; plot summaries; character names; movie ratings; year of release; running times; movie trivia; quotes; goofs; soundtracks; personal trivia; alternative names; certificates; color information; country of production; genres; production companies; distributors; special effects companies; sound mix; reference literature; filming locations; sequel/remake information; release dates; advertising tag lines; detailed technical data; alternative versions; laserdisc availability; languages; reviews; links to official studio pages, fan pages, image and multimedia archives; direct purchase links for movies and associated merchandise; box office grosses; movie posters and Academy Award information?...it's all there. An alternate site, The Internet Movie Database , is the same as far as I can tell, but not based in the United Kingdom. But how does one base something cyberspacian in a particular country. There must be a difference between these two sites. When I figure it out, I'll update this.
Regardless, they're handy-dandy sites to visit when one wonders "Who IS that actor and WHAT have I seen him in before?"moviefinder.com has a title or last name search. Title Search provides a plot summary including award nominations. Also available is a search of pictures similar to the title chosen. Name Search provides a photo, filmography, biography (vital statistics, awards, family) and online articles. moviefinder.com is the most comprehensive source of celebrity information I've found to date.
videoflicks.com features The American Film Institute's list of America's 100 Greatest Movies. Click on a title for a synopsis, reviews, cast, crew, awards, and the opportunity to purchase the video online.
Past Times Nostalgia Movie Links features a large collection of links including 'Hollywood Snapshots and Photos - photos from the past'; Palace - The Classic Film Site; Reel - large movie store and database of films; Showbiz Search Engine; Toronto Film Society; Vintage Hollywood; Welcome to the Balcony! Who's to blame for the movie-ratings mess? We all are
"There's ample evidence that plenty of parents don't bother with the system, from the parents who bring preschoolers to movies as unnerving and/or violent as The Blair Witch Project, The Haunting, South Park, Summer of Sam, Scream or Alien Resurrection -- all films where colleagues or I have spotted very young children -- to the middle-school classes I spoke to in the spring, where only one student out of about 100 lamented that his parents don't let him see R-rated films."
