2002

Duct tape. It's the secret. Everything held together in 2002. Duct tape. And chocolate.

Everything with the girls is great. . .praise the Lord. They love Second Grade and their teacher, Mrs. Thé. They enjoy orchestra, Suzuki violin, Spanish class, and Adventurers once a week. Kilory loves anything with horses. Nikki lives with her nose in a book.

They saw the ocean for the first time in February when we (Gramma, PaPa, and all the dogs included) visited Sally and family in Galveston.Galveston, 2-19-02 They loved playing with cousin Tyler, splashing their legs in the waves, and visiting the Moody Aquarium and Rainforest.

For their seventh birthday we joined two other February-borns in renting out a skating rink. Hard to tell whether the kids or the parents had more fun doing the hokey-pokey on wheels.

We still have four dogs and two cats under our riotous roof. Bruno and Rudi sleep in the girls' room. Sylvia sleeps guard at the front window. Sylvia's big, she's loud, she'd be scary to a stranger, and she's got a secret: she's scared of mice. We had a mouse in the house for a month. While sitting in a huge chair, I saw said rodent, squealed for Alan and tried to draw my feet up on said chair, but there wasn't any room because Sylvia was getting into the chair with me. The morning Alan caught the mouse I had Kilory crawling into bed on one side of me and Sylvia (who piddled all the way down the hall) on the other. Brave and liberated women, we are not. And we don't care. So there.

In the July 4th parade, Alan and the girls rode on the Adventurer Club float, which won Best Decorated. I sat in the tow vehicle with Buki. Buki was painted red, white, and blue. He tied for Best Animal Entry. Actually, the newspaper said: "Best Animal Entry -- Michelle and Garrett Long (Balaam's Talking Donkey), and Chrissie Weis and her dog." Now there's one for my resume: "Best Animal Entry...Chrissie Weis and her dog."

Last Christmas, the Adventurer float plans fizzled at the last minute giving us no time to prepare our family float, so the girls (costumed as Pooh and Tigger) rode lighted bikes as Alan and I (costumed as Rabbit and Eeyore) walked alongside. I'd sadly decided that this year I'd still wear my Eeyore costume, but would merely wave to my Adventurers as they rolled past. The last newspaper before the parade, however, featured a photo of the four of us from last year.Piglet and Eeyore tie for "Most Unusual." The caption read: "A FAMILY THAT PARADES TOGETHER: Perennial parade participants Alan & Chrissie Weis, Nikki and Kilory, who paraded last year as characters from Winnie the Poo (sic), are expected back this year along with what could be a record number of entries." So I put together the Thistle Patch Computer Designs Corporate Float: a beat up wagon with a lantern and a Charlie Brown Christmas "tree." As Eeyore, I trudged in the rain carrying Buki (painted pink and wearing a Piglet costume), and pulling the "float" behind me. We tied for Most Unusual Entry. Alan (and Lisa Harvey)'s efforts won Best Overall trophy for the Adventurer float.

I'm still web-authoring for money although it's dried to a trickle.* Good news: it allows me to tackle projects important to me. Blah news: we need more than a trickle. A tiny piece I wrote is slated for "Signs of The Times" April 2003. Keep an eye out if you like.
*Don't use the Weis website as justification. I haven't updated or repaired since I started web-authoring for money.

Alan labors at Seminars Unlimited. They're in temporary housing while they continue building their campus. Alan's hand-dug well in the back yard hasn't advanced an inch since 2000. But the bathroom renovation he began in February 2002 nears completion. A total Grinch, I told him no new Christmas decor (the lights from 2000 are still on our house) until the shower is usable. I want a shower. The power company is heart-broken: their Christmas bonuses depend on Alan's electric display. "You're a mean one, Mr[s]. Grinch..."

Texas 2002 provided no drought, or Texas Heat. The only day the temperature reached 100 was July 25, the day Great-Aunt Louise died at age 95.

Kilory, Nikki, and ShannonAlan, Harry, Ella, Shannon, Ella, Vialo, Ruth, Vialo Sr.Other family news for the newsletter history archives: Craig and Sheri Denny moved to A------- in January (we're THRILLED!); Susen (Weis) Wright gave birth to Kaitlyn Marie on Dec. 18; and her dad, Vialo wed Shannon C. Prescott on Dec. 22. Vialo introduced me to Shannon on December 25, 1999. The very next day I put a wedding present for them in my cart. That a stranger took it out of my cart before I got to the check-out line is beside the point. I just KNEW a wedding was coming. Shannon is fun! I like her.

Diagnosed with osteoporosis in July, I pop calcium and magnesium, and keep trucking. It's likely lots of women my age have bones that are already thin, it's just that nobody checks until you're blue-haired. I checked. I've got it. Get checked!

May you be victorious with your resolutions (Twenty pounds shed, ten more to go!), and remember – duct tape!
