"That child is hard to understand in some respects. But I believe she'll turn out all right yet. And there's one thing certain, no home will ever be dull that she's in." - Marilla, Anne of Green Gables

LiveCam Photo of Green Gables, Cavendish, PEI , once the home of cousins of Lucy Maud Montgomery's grandfather. The photo is to be updated every 30 minutes. This farm inspired the setting for Montgomery's novel, Anne of Green Gables . The picture is taken from the top floor of the recreated granary building on the grounds of Green Gables. Once the sun goes down, there's not much to see, but you can select a picture from earlier in the day.

Tour Green Gables with QuickTimeVR . In March of 1997, before the May 23, 1997 fire, a photographer was sent to Green Gables house to prepare a complete set of photographs to prepare 3D QuickTimeVR panoramas of each room in the house. Fire rennovations are now complete. Using Apple's QuickTime VR player (if you're a featherbrain like me let me remind you to INSTALL it after you download it for free), you can explore the kitchen, entrance, dining room, etc., as they originally appeared as if you were standing right there.

A National Geographic article on Prince Edward Island -- A World Apart No More concerning how the new eight-mile Confederate Bridge linking P.E.I. to New Brunswick may affect the island.

An article on how "Nincompoop bureaucrats bungle a bridge name." Historical and informative article on Mi'Kmaq place names. A favorite excerpt: MOST PEOPLE who have called the island home have been more than fond of this lovely, watery name. Here is Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables, writing in 1939 in Prince Edward Island, "You never know what peace is until you walk on the shores or in the fields or along the winding red roads of Abegweit on a summer twilight when the dew is falling and the old, old stars are peeping out and the sea keeps its nightly tryst with the little land it loves."

Island Nature Trust (Prince Edward Island) , a non-profit organization devoted to the protection and management of natural areas. The aims are to acquire lands to be held in trust for future generations and to manage lands as an example of appropriate and sustained use.
Island Nature Trust has created a unique "Adopt an Eagle Program" . The eagle is a non-game bird, and as with most wildlife species, it is the loss of habitat that is the biggest threat to this bird. Eagle band numbers may be purchased by groups, individuals or corporations for $100.00. The young eaglets are banded at their nests in the spring and the information written on a certificate to be presented to the person who purchased the band number. They could also name the eaglet. Information on the eagles will be passed on to sponsors, whenever their band number is observed by conservation officiers. In addition to the certificate and information on the adopted bird, adoptive parents receive a 20 page booklet explaining all about eagles on P.E.I.
Become a "Guardian of a Natural Area" . The Island Nature Trust has an ongoing honorary deed program whereby an individual or group can purchase 1/4 acreGreen Gables House, Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada -- link to info pagelink to large image of Green Gables House, Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada -- photo by Patrick M. Slattery of a natural area on Prince Edward Island. For each $100.00 donated to the program, you will receive a certificate and deed to 1/4 acre as well as a map showing the lot and a tax creditable receipt. The areas currently being deeded out are at Gordon's Island and Trout River ...Methinks I need contribute in order to frame and hang the certificate inside our own Green Gables!

*I enjoyed the Anne of Green Gables book series as a pre-adolescent. Loving souls with tired ears likened my flights of fancy, melodramatics (i.e., Anne's rendition of The Lady of Shalott and The Highwayman ), verbosity, and vivid imagination to that of Anne Shirley, L.M. Montgomery's most famous heroine. As an adult I enjoy the Wonderworks miniseries.
So much so I made a Green Gables Playhouse for my girls, which will transform into a Green Gables storage shed for me in about 2007 A.D. Postcard Aunt Charlotte gave me of Green Gables House, Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, Canada
The trick was fashioning an Arrow Storage Shed after Green Gables House in Cavendish on Prince Edward Island -- the farmhouse which inspired the setting for the Anne Shirley escapades. Donald and Melody helped us put the storage shed up in one day. The rest took me nearly a year.

'But it's so ridiculous to have a redheaded Elaine,' mourned Anne. '...Ruby ought to be Elaine because she is so fair and has such lovely long golden hair-- Elaine had `all her bright hair streaming down,' you know. And Elaine was the lily maid. Now, a red-haired person cannot be a lily maid.'

Don't miss An Unfortunate Lily Maid , CHAPTER XXVIII,
